Abstract
Un nouveau terme a émergé sur la scène politique paraguayenne à partir de 2003 : tendota. Mot guarani interprété comme signifiant « guide » pour certains et « dictateur » pour d'autres. Cet article relève et analyse les mots du pouvoir, leur symbolique et leur usage dans les relations médiatisées au niveau national mais surtout dans les relations interpersonnelles locales, grâce à une étude ethnographique. Dans ce pays métis et bilingue guarani espagnol, la disparition, l'érosion et la resémantisation de mots espagnols et guarani révèlent une effective démilitarisation du champ sémantique de l'autorité. L'image de l'homme providentiel reste cependant centrale, à tous les niveaux.
