Abstract
This working paper reports on a survey of participants in the Queensland road and bridge industry. The survey focused on innovation in the industry , particularly the use of technologies and advanced practices. Questions were asked regarding innovation levels, types, strategies, drivers, obstacles and impacts. In addition to looking at the uptake of existing innovations, the survey also measured original innovation activity . The findings indicate high innovation rates compared to a Canadian study, and reveal the importance of: 1. business practice innovations for organisational success; 2. financial performance and client actions as' drivers' of innovation; 3. evaluation and staff-related initiatives as strategies for maximising innovation outcomes; 4. financial constraints and 'risk-aversion' as significant obstacles to innovation; and, 5. challenges specific to public sector innovation efforts.
