Baseado em um trabalho de campo antropológico desenvolvido na região portuária do Rio de Janeiro nos anos de 2013 e de 2014, o artigo tem como objetivo principal analisar a maneira pela qual grupos ligados ao carnaval e ao samba locais lidam com o novo contexto de reurbanização. O processo de reurbanização é marcado pela implementação do projeto Porto Maravilha, a maior parceria públicoprivada (PPP) da América Latina, que aspira transformar a zona em um “novo cartão postal” a ser frequentado por visitantes. Para compreender como os grupos ligados às atividades musicais populares se posicionam nesse novo contexto de reurbanização, nos parece necessário não perder de vista a projeção que o termo ‘cultura’ tem ganhado para a elaboração dos projetos contemporâneos de renovação urbana, claramente influenciados por paradigmas urbanísticos que defendem o papel da cultura na internacionalização da economia. Parece-nos complementar ao objetivo principal analisarmos igualmente como os administradores do projeto Porto Maravilha entendem as atividades musicais locais e como lidam com as demandas sociais e contribuições, ao projeto, que esses atores locais elaboram.
