Abstract
This paper contributes some ideas to the basic question of the interrelationship between economic action and cultural context. Instead of identifying typical characteristics of the Islamic or Moroccan economic culture, the research focuses on the inter-cultural relationships and processes of exchange that are effective in economic development. This article adopts as theoretical framework a recent approach in German comparative cultural sociology whereby culture is viewed as process of translation. Using this approach the case study of the textile manufacturing Bencherif family in Morocco is examined. The Bencherifs have succeeded in shaping a modern, industrialized enterprise from a traditional silk-weaving mill in the style of around 1900. The cultural dimensions of this transformation result from the processes of exchange in confrontation with European or French modernity.
