Les vertus des fruits sont bien connues depuis des décennies et ils sont consommés partout dans le monde pour leurs bienfaits sur la santé humaine. La demande étant toujours croissante pour la consommation, les producteurs et les entrepreneurs québécois s'intéressent donc à la culture des petits fruits sauvages depuis quelques années. Les régions nordiques du Québec ont un avantage marqué pour développer cette industrie car le climat frais influencerait favorablement les concentrations de divers composés comme les sucres et les antioxydants. Les petits fruits nordiques que l'on retrouve de façon indigène au Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean sont d'ailleurs très bien adaptés au climat boréal et la productivité en vergers semble très prometteuse. Dans cette optique, la Coop de solidarité forestière de la Rivière-aux-Saumons a décidé de mener une expérience sur l'implantation de diverses espèces de petits fruits en forêt, ainsi que sur l'implantation de cultures de sapin de Noël. Les produits forestiers non ligneux (PFNL) implantés sont l'amélanchier à feuille d'aulne (Amelanchier alnifolia interior), l'aronia noir (Aronia melanocarpa), le bleuet (Vaccinium myrtilloides et Vaccinium angustifolium), le sapin baumier (Abies balsamea) et la viorne trilobée (Viburnum trilobum).
