Abstract
Bordering Calgary's soaring corporate slyline to the East and its 'world famous' Stampede grounds to the West, lies an area designated by city maps and urban cartographers as East Victoria Park.A shrinking residential community sandwiched between the ever-e'rpanding development interests of a growing municipality and the proverbial 'crisis' of the inner-city, this location is as much a conjuncture of assembled meanings and 'common-sense' as it is a physical space.This thesis is interested in those discursive patterns of representation and systems of meaning that have been responsible for constructing East Victoria Park in the social and geographical imaginations of Calgarians.By locating and then anaiyzing many of the cultural practices, policies and public representations associated with this urban locale, we will seek to understand the ways in which these discursive elements have been deployed and the range of social functions they have been made to serve.
