Abstract
Frequently commented-upon themes in Munro’s oeuvre include the mores of small societies, gender roles, and episodes that transform people’s lives. Munro’s first collection contains additional, subtler sub-themes or motifs: the fragility of particular moments, the frailty and persistence of voluntary social contracts, the unpredictable behaviour of some individuals and the absurd nature of events. This essay connects the preoccupations of Dance of the Happy Shades with the creation of protagonists whose independence of mind is their only weapon against the larger forces of coercion. Both coercion and Munro’s strategies of resistance remain live issues, for Canadian and non-Canadian readers alike.
