Abstract
HeartRhythm Case Reports is the companion journal to HeartRhythm, and together they comprise the 2 official journals of the Heart Rhythm Society. HeartRhythm Case Reports is in the completion of its first year in publication. The journal was organized to take advantage of the many excellent case reports that had tremendous educational and scientific value but, because of page limitations, were not published in HeartRhythm. The state of the journal is strong and the volume of submissions has been a favorable surprise. In 2014 we received 124 submissions when the journal website became active in the second half of the year. In 2015 we have already received 289. The average submissions per month are 31. The top 5 countries that have submitted articles for consideration are, in descending order, the United States, Japan, Canada, Italy, and Spain. Each article is reviewed by me and, typically, a section editor with particular expertise in the area. If appropriate for further review, the manuscripts are then sent to 2 or more peer reviewers. HeartRhythm Case Reports enjoys an internationally represented section editor staff and editorial board. We have used 381 reviewers from 26 countries and have appreciated their time and talents in performing timely reviews. We remain committed to the mission of the journal to promote education about and understanding of heart rhythm disorders worldwide. The journal has also benefited from a tremendous interest by the pediatric and adult congenital electrophysiology committees. To truly service this community, we were fortunate to have Dr Elizabeth Stephenson join our editorial board as a section editor in the fall of 2015. HeartRhythm Case Reports is an open-access online journal. We have tracked downloads worldwide from many developed and underdeveloped countries. The scope of interest through these many countries highlights the need for this forum and the sharing of educational cases that focus on heart rhythm disorders and their management. As an online journal, we face unique challenges. The journal must be dynamic, be adaptive, and take advantage of multiple social media outlets for promotion. To meet this need an editorial position has been created for the online promotion of both Heart Rhythm Society journals. Dr Daniel Morin, a section editor for HeartRhythm Case Reports, will become the inaugural online editor. We look forward to his leadership and innovation as the 2 journals continue to adapt to meet the needs of an evolving online community and Heart Rhythm Society. We will continue to work on rapid return of reviews and early online publication of accepted articles. All accepted articles will be promoted broadly on the journal website and through the many social media outlets to improve their potential global impact. The journal remains committed to all members of the heart rhythm disorders community—in particular, those support and technical staff members who provide so much to those who treat heart rhythm disorders. We encourage allied staff to consider submitting their cases and interesting observations that have value to the allied health community in general, as well as to all those who treat heart rhythm disorders. The publication fee for members has been reduced to encourage these submissions, and our allied staff section editor, Joel Herbrandson, will review each case. As more unknown electrocardiograms and images are submitted, we hope to create an educational database that can be used to create questions for additional study. In this regard, we wish to strongly encourage these submissions, as they will greatly advance the journal’s mission. I have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to serve as editor-in-chief of HeartRhythm Case Reports and work with the many talented members of the editorial staff and board. I am optimistic that the journal will continue to experience growth and worldwide interest. As we turn the page on volume 1, and look forward to volume 2, we welcome your input, submissions, and expertise to the journal.
