Abstract
The North features among the ranks of the topoi central to the French-Canadian identity. It acts as an 'elsewhere' and as an opening to the hostile elements in the region in order to redefine the cultural particularities their, which in turn creates a nodal point in the historical memory of Quebec. This study of 'La p che blanche' by Lise Tremblay shows the extent to which the North remains an object of reminiscence, which shifts the representations to respond to current contradictions. In Tremblays novel, the memories are dialogic and bind the stories of two brothers called toward the North, while diffracting a memory of nomadism and of the Quebec spaces taking its place in a continental configuration. The status of references, the symbolic appropriation of the fjord, the conflictual and epistolary ideas involved in Nordic memories make up part of a mutating Quebecois conjuncture and show that the novel performs as much the task of reevaluating the Canadian-French memory as a realignment of the continental aspect of Quebec.
