This article summarizes the Walkerton, Ontario, Canada E. coli tragedy of May 2000. The events of the tragedy are related, along with the impact on Walkerton, the physical causes of the contamination, serious failures on the part of the operators, and the failure of the Walkerton Public Utilities Commission to properly respond to the May 1998 inspection report that indicated serious problems with the manner in which the Walkerton water system was being operated.
