Libraire et éditeur durant plus de 25 ans, François Maspero incarne aujourd’hui, pour la nouvelle génération d’éditeurs « critiques », la figure majeure de l’engagement par les livres. Son parcours atypique s’inscrit pleinement dans une période tout à fait spécifique de la France contemporaine confrontée aux défis de la décolonisation et de la guerre d’Algérie, puis aux débats idéologiques qui entourent le moment de mai 68, jusqu’à l’alternance politique de 1981. L’on ne saurait toutefois retenir que son action en faveur de l’indépendance algérienne et son militantisme révolutionnaire, tel qu’ils se représentent, par exemple, à travers les publications des revues Partisans et Tricontinentale. L’éditeur de la place Paul-Painlevé a aussi fortement contribué à élargir le champ des sciences humaines et sociales à d’autres approches. Il a participé aux mutations culturelles de l’époque et s’est fait le passeur de la pensée du Tiers Monde à une époque où elle était plus que méconnue en France. Son retrait coïncide avec des années « désabusées », ouvertes sur une mondialisation sous l’égide du libéralisme.
