Abstract
A brief introduction of the speaker and icebreaking experience was followed by a description of the CCGS Henry Larsen, including its ice class, operational capabilities and its normal area of operations. A brief discussion of the differences and distinctions between the class of ‘icebreaker’ and ‘ice strengthened vessels’ was presented, along with a description of the purpose and capabilities of each. Differentiation between the two classes is important, considering there are some popular misconceptions regarding Ice Class, even within Industry. Next discussed is the subject of ice anomalies that develop along the Newfoundland and Labrador Coasts. Charts and graphics were used to show the type of features that develop along the Newfoundland and Labrador Coasts, which are unique to this area. The development of this “Labrador Porridge”, or extreme rubble field, is shown to be a result of the prevalent oceanographic, climatic and geographic conditions in this region. The huge “brash/rubble” ice fields that develop along the coastlines as a result of the Labrador Current and the perpetual northeasterly swells in this area were illustrated. Photos of the particular ice features and their effects on marine traffic were presented. The hazards and challenges confronting mariners who navigate through these ice fields were identified. Hazardous ice features in the region include the depth of ice keels within the rubble field and their effects on vessel momentum and maneuverability. Using a chart of the area from Cape Harrigan (55.8°N) to Cape Kiglapait (57.1°N), the development of shear lines within the “rubble” field was shown. Ice movement along those shear lines, and the challenges that it poses to marine traffic in this area, was discussed. The presentation was concluded with some general remarks about navigating ice-covered waters along the Newfoundland and Labrador Coasts. A five minute video of footage taken from CCGS Henry Larsen during her Voisey’s Probe in 1997 was used to illustrate points touched upon during the presentation. The video footage showed close up shots of the rubble field during the ship’s transit, along with footage of some “old ice” features, which can also be encountered in this area.
