Abstract
Cet article revient sur les travaux de Marshall McLuhan et sur leur influence diffuse sur les études médiévales, au Canada et ailleurs. Le paradigme médiatique formulé par McLuhan lui permet, dans La Galaxie Gutenberg, de dépeindre un Moyen Âge transitionnel, une civilisation mixte qui tend vers une domination massive des médias visuels et vers l’invention de l’imprimerie, mais a encore un pied fermement ancré dans le paysage médiatique antérieur, celui de l’ouïe et de la synesthésie. L’article examine la valeur heuristique des propositions formulées par McLuhan, ainsi que leur influence sur le discours médiéviste canadien, depuis la lecture critique de Paul Zumthor au début des années 1980 jusqu’aux approches actuelles fondées dans le renouveau philologique et codicologique de la fin du xxe siècle et du début du xxie.
