THE IMPACT OF THE FREDERICTON AIRPORT ON THE KNOWLEDGE INDUSTRY IN CENTRAL AND WESTERN NEW BRUNSWICK

Abstract
The importance of airports to the communities has long been recognized. In recent years, the nature of commerce has been transformed by emerging technologies and greater levels of international trade. Fredericton has enjoyed significant growth in this environment. In 1999, the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Transportation Group undertook a study of the importance of the Fredericton Airport to this sector of the economy. This paper reports the results of that study. The paper examines the nature of the industry and outlines its growth in recent years and its importance to the local economy. The paper then examines the economic importance of the airport to that industry. The economic importance is evaluated by measuring the impact of the loss of the airport. The analysis is based on a survey of those industries and an examination of the proportion of their work which is not local and which would be lost if convenient and good air transport was not available.
