Florent CyglerNotamment depuis la publication de la monographie au titre programmatique de L. J. Lekai (The Cistercians.Ideals and Reality, Kent [Ohio], 1977), les travaux consacrés aux cisterciens placent volontiers la question du jeu entre « idéal » et « réalité » au centre de leur démarche.La très récente thèse d'habilitation d'E.G. (université de Passau, 2002), dont vient de s'enrichir la dynamique collection « Vita regularis », adopte elle aussi cette problématique par le biais d'une approche éprouvée en la matière, puisqu'il s'agit de se pencher sur les rapports entre centre et périphérie (p.2).Cette périphérie est en l'espèce constituée des 14 abbayes cisterciennes d'hommes sises en Franconie et « Bavière ancienne » (« Altbayern », c'est-à-dire en gros le territoire correspondant au duché de Bavière réduit confié en 1180, après la chute du duc Henri le Lion, par l'empereur Frédéric Barberousse au comte palatin Otton de Wittelsbach) ou bien à proximité immédiate, comme c'est le cas de l'abbaye souabe de Kaisheim ; toutes furent fondées au XIIe s., à l'exception des trois abbayes bavaroises de Fürstenfeld, Fürstenzell et Gotteszell, fondées ultérieurement dans la seconde moitié du XIIIe s.E.G., cependant, ne se concentre que sur huit d'entre elles, à savoir Ebrach, Heilsbronn, Langheim, Kaisheim, Adelsbach, Fürstenfeld, Fürstenzell et Gotteszell.La période considérée est un long « Moyen Âge cistercien », qui court de la fondation de Cîteaux aux débuts des Temps modernes, époque marquée en Europe centrale germanique par la Réforme et la Guerre des Paysans de 1524-1525 (« Bauernkrieg »).Le cadre spatio-temporel ainsi délimité, mis à part la relative proximité géographique des abbayes visées et les liens de filiation plus ou moins directs qui les unissent (toutes appartiennent à la filiation de Morimond ; Heilsbronn, Langheim, Adelsbach et Bildhausen sont filles d'Ebrach ; GOEZ, Elke, Pragmatische Schriftlichkeit und Archivpflege der Zisterzienser....
