Abstract
Since the beginning of the peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, the prospects for a political settlement of the conflict have been seen in close connection with the economic situation. The PLO, as well as the donor countries, hoped to see the private sector become the main pillar of the emerging Palestinian economy, generally describing it as dominated by traditional businesses. The first part of this article connects family business—a concept well-established in the Western oriental sciences—to Edward Said's concept of Orientalism. The question is raised: which concept of space and culture supports the orientalist perspective and should consequently be avoided as the basis of the term family business?
