Abstract
Over the last four years, I have managed a drop-in centre for disadvantaged and homeless people in the inner city area of Perth, Western Australia. Many of those who access the centre suffer from co-existing mental health and substance misuse issues and a quarter of those who come are from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background. People come to 'hang out' as they have nowhere else to go; they can also have a shower, receive free tea and coffee, participate in recreation activities and purchase a low-cost midday meal.
