Surtout connu pour son oeuvre potique et, dans des cercles plus restreints d'rudits, pour son Histoire du duch d'Oldenbourg, G. A. von Halem n'avait encore fait jusqu'ici l'objet d'aucune tude globale. Cette monographie, issue d'une thse de doctorat, comble donc une lacune ; le propos n'est pas biographique, il s'agit de montrer la reprsentativit du personnage et son originalit au sein du mouvement d'Aufklrung.
