Abstract

In previous papers, a method was developed for the statistical characterization of iceberg shape based on available data for the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. Key aspects included a measure of overall size and the representation of shape using spatial correlations in a spherical coordinate system. The present paper focuses on the use of these representative iceberg shapes to investigate the effect of incremental changes in mass on iceberg draft and waterline length as a result of various deterioration mechanisms. Comparison is also made to measured distributions for mass, length and draft. These relationships play a role in the iceberg deterioration process, the likelihood of grounding events and potential distress to pipelines or cables on the seafloor.
