Le mérite de cet ouvrage est double. D’une part, V.L. enrichit notre connaissance du suicide à l’époque moderne en fondant son étude sur 303 cas (dont 120 documentés) de suicides (ou de tentatives) dans les duchés de Schleswig et de Holstein entre 1600 et 1820. Il s’agit d’hommes avant tout (69%), généralement jeunes, qui se recrutent prioritairement parmi les petits artisans et les domestiques, les paysans, eux, semblant plus épargnés.
