Abstract
Baseball, because it brings attributes of identity and speech, can reveal important facets of culture to work in a specific society and a given time. In Quebec, baseball was introduced in the nineteenth century by the French-speaking elite to short-circuit the British and to develop a North-South axis bond with the United States, in a new French account of integration. Consequently, the representations of this sport often sought to naturalise this play, to allot identity functions suitable to it in the Quebec context. The novels, Trente arpents by Ringuet and Les Plouffe by Roger Lemelin, show the cultural changes in baseball in order to show that identity negotiated by this play passes by tactics of resistance and displacement of American speech. In these works, baseball becomes a vector of the otherness which comprises the people of Quebec's identity.
