Abstract
The Mediterranean city is a distinct urban type1. Whether located in Europe, in North Africa, or in the coastal regions of Turkey and the Levant, Mediterranean cities are unique and distinct in their histories, in their urban designs, in their architecture, and in their specific functions and hinterland relationships. Greek-Roman planning principles are still visible in many circum-Mediterranean cities, with Oriental or “Islamic” urban designs superimposed not only in Africa or Asia but also on the Iberian peninsula, in Southern Italy, and in significant areas of Greece and the Balkans. European influences are responsible for the most recent layers, creating a unique blend of old and new, of Eastern and Western urbanity. Historically, Mediterranean cities have always been trading hubs and/or residential centres for aristocrats, administrators, traders, and landlords. They still are today.
