Abstract
The first volume of Champion's monumental edition of Zola's preparatory notes appeared in 2003 (see French Studies, 62 (2008), 221; 63 (2009), 481–82). That it has taken a decade for the project to reach the dossiers of the fourteenth and fifteenth of the Rougon-Macquart cycle, L'Œuvre and La Terre respectively, bears witness both to its scope and to the resilience and dedication of the scholars undertaking it. Somewhat curiously, however, the preface to this latest testimony to what has been rightly called Colette Becker's ‘Herculean labours’ reprints two essays by her on Germinal, the first (dating from 1980) devoted to the development of the character of Étienne Lantier, and the second to Zola's corrections in the course of both drafting that novel and preparing it for serial publication. More pertinent might have been a rehearsal of what we know about Zola's habits of composition and a stress on the imperative of consulting specialist work devoted to the genesis of the two texts in question. For while the transcription of Zola's manuscript elaborations, jottings, and lists allows future generations of researchers unmediated access to the preliminary imaginings for each and every one of Les Rougon-Macquart, this mass of raw material is presented (opposite facsimile reproductions) in the disorder of its original Bibliothèque nationale archiving. There must be a risk that Zola's reflections will be cited in ignorance of the necessary reconstruction of a palimpsest-like creative dynamic. That said, this edition is an incomparable and definitive resource. It comes at a price (€480 just for these two through-paginated volumes under review) that only academic libraries will be able to, and will have to, afford.
