Abstract

Cet article analyse le fonctionnement de presque en incidence nominale, envisageant son rôle dans la phrase et en évaluant son interaction avec les catégories lexicales et leurs contours. Deux analyses dominent, l’une qui fait de presque un outil de l’approximation, une « enclosure » — l’« hedge » de Lakoff ; l’autre qui fait entrer dans la logique argumentative et y voit un « opérateur scalaire ». À partir d’un corpus extrait de la base textuelle Frantext qui regroupe 1 940 textes catégorisés entre 1800 et 2000, ont été exploitées les différentes combinaisons de « presque + nom », soit les structures suivantes : – déterminant + presque + nom, – presque + déterminant + nom, – presque + article zéro + nom. L’analyse des occurrences de presque dans ces configurations syntagmatiques prend pour cadres plusieurs modèles théoriques pour en évaluer le rendement. La sémantique du prototype qui peut être corrélée à l’interprétation de presque comme outil de l’approximation, la logique argumentative et la théorie des isotopies. L’article répond à la double question suivante : l’instruction procédurale de presque consiste-t-elle en une régulation, une négociation discursive ? L’adverbe se sert-il plutôt de la continuité entre les catégories, inscrite dans la langue même, pour jouer le rôle d’un passeur catégoriel ? L’étude des structures avec presque conduit à une réflexion plus générale sur l’organisation du lexique qui se constitue par contiguïté et proximité permettant de postuler une configuration métonymique générale du lexique nominal.
