Abstract
In diesem Aufsatz geht es um die Rekonstruktion der Anfänge der Alternate History (bzw. der Alternativwelt-Geschichte), einer Untergattung der Science Fiction. Ausgangspunkt ist die Überlegung, dass es sich um eine höchst unwahrscheinliche Gattung handelt, deren Erfolg auf die Erarbeitung neuer Akzeptanz- und Glaubwürdigkeitsschwellen angewiesen war. Aus evolutionärer Perspektive wird beschrieben, wie - nach einer Reihe von erfolglosen früheren Versuchen - die Entwicklung der Alternate History aus der Refunktionalisierung etablierter literarischer Handlungselemente (vor allem der Zeitreise und der Mehrfachweltenhypothese) hervorging. Eine interessante Konsequenz dieser Evolution war der erneute Austausch zwischen Geschichtsschreibung und allohistorischer Fiktion.
