Abstract
A total of 114 351 first lactations of Holsteins in 4770 herds were analysed using a multi-trait mixed sire model. Cumulative feed intake measures at 90 d and 305 d were total energy, total protein and total dry matter (DM), and energy from concentrate (grain plus protein supplement), and protein and DM base ration separately. Production traits were milk yield and fat and protein yield and percentage. Heritabilities for total energy, protein and DM intakes ranged from 0.15 to 0.25 for 90 d and from 0.24 to 0.35 for 305 d. Heritabilities of energy, protein and DM intakes from concentrate were 0.10 at 90 d and 0.23 at 305 d. Heritabilities of energy, protein and DM intakes from base ration ranged from 0.14 to 0.29 at 90 d and from 0.26 to 0.40 at 305 d. Genetic correlations of yields with total intakes ranged from 0.52 to 0.76 for 90 d and from 0.54 to 0.81 for 305 d.
