Abstract: Physical processes controlling soil respiration: results from four sites in eastern Nova Scotia
Bibliographic record
Abstract
Soil respiration is a critical determinant of landscape carbon balance, and global atmospheric carbon concentrations. Variations in soil temperature and moisture patterns are important physical processes controlling soil respiration that need to be better understood. Relationships between soil respiration and physical controls are typically addressed using only surface fl ux data though other more intensive methods also exist that permit more rigorous interpretation of soil respiration processes. Here we use a combination of subsurface CO2 concentrations, surface CO2 fl uxes, and detailed physical monitoring of the subsurface environment to examine physical controls on soil CO2 production at four climate observatories in Nova Scotia. Results indicate that subsurface CO2 production is more strongly correlated to the subsurface thermal environment than is surface CO2 fl ux. Soil moisture was also found to have an important infl uence on subsurface CO2 production, particularly as a control on soil profi le gas diffusivity. Non-diffusive profi le CO2 transport appears to be

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
