This paper presents an overview of the borehole indentor system that was specially developed at the National Research Council Canada for measuring the in situ rates-ensitivity of ice strength and the ice deformation properties. The borehole indentor system includes a fibre-glass core auger, a stainless steel indentor, and the associated electronics. The working principles of the indentor are discussed, and a brief description of the field programs in which the indentor has been used is presented. This paper is a companion paper to the papers on the measured borehole strengths of level ice (Johnston, 2005-a) and hummocked ice (Johnston, 2005-b) near Nain, Labrador.
