Physical management using supply vessels and comprehensive detection systems help reduce the risk of iceberg damage to offshore installations on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. In this paper, the means by which these have been characterized in iceberg load models is described. Many offshore drilling, production and ice management activities can be expressed in terms of time taken, which has been selected as the basic unit in the model. Detection and iceberg ranges are converted to time through iceberg drift rates. Times associated with physical management operations are estimated, within creasing success for time taken through repeated attempts. In the case of movable platforms such as FPSOs, emergency disconnection time is considered. Each of the above processes has been characterized based on data from previous iceberg management experience. Detection and management operations are influenced by iceberg size and sea state, which are key aspects of the approach.
