Abstract
William Henry Twenhofel (1875–1957) did not even begin his geological training at Yale University until age 32 in 1907. He then completed a BA, MSc, and PhD in fi ve years, with his 1912 PhD being done on the geology, stratigraphy, and physiography of the Ordovician Silurian sediments of Anticosti Island at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. During the fi eld season of 1909 he walked 700 miles to circumnavigate the entire island. After a brief period at the University of Kansas, he moved in 1916 to the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he became a full Professor in 1921.
