Depression in the elderly: symptoms in institutionalised and non-institutionalised individuals

Abstract
Enquadramento: As perturbações psiquiátricas no idoso são comuns e responsáveis pela perda de autonomia, pelo agravamento de quadros patológicos preexistentes e pela neglicência no auto cuidado. Objetivos: O presente trabalho pretende estudar a associação entre a institucionalização e a presença de depressão em idosos. Metodologia: Foi desenvolvido um estudo transversal, realizado num grupo de idosos com mais de 65 anos, a quem foi aplicada a Escala de Depressão Geriátrica (EDG). Resultados: Foram estudados 75 idosos com idades compreendidas entre os 65 e os 91 anos de idade. 44 encontravam-se internados institucionalizados e 31 viviam na comunidade. A prevalência de sintomas de depressão foi mais elevada nos idosos solteiros e viúvos relativamente aos idosos casados (p<0,001). A probabilidade de apresentar sintomas de depressão foi 74,1% mais baixa nos idosos não institucionalizados. Conclusão: O facto de estes idosos viverem sozinhos, serem viúvos e estarem institucionalizados parece contribuir de forma evidente para a presença de sintomas depressivos. Encontrar atitudes terapêuticas que minimizem o impacto da institucionalização seria imperioso.
