Dit is nie alleen Gereformeerdes wat in hulle kerkgeskiedenisboeke skryf dat die Reformasie van die 16de eeu die belangrikste gebeurtenis in die tydvak na Christus in Europa se geskiedenis was nie, maar ook Roomse navorsers sien dit nou se. Die Amerikaanse Roomse historikus, John P Dolan, noem in sy boek, History of the Reformation (Toronto, 1967), hierdie Reformasie onbetwisbaar die belangrikste gebeurtenis in die geskiedenis van die Wes-Europese denke sedert die koms van die Christendom.
