Abstract
El papel del farmacéutico se desarrolló rápidamente para cubrir las necesidades de los sistemas sanitarios. La cuidadosa dispensación de medicamentos bajo prescripción y el consejo fundado sobre la automedicación responsable, permanecen como parte vitalmente importante del servicio prestado por los farmacéuticos, quienes reconocen que goza de la misma importancia aconsejar a otros profesionales de la salud sobre el uso seguro y racional de fármacos como aceptar la responsabilidad de garantizar que los medicamentos sean empleados con seguridad y eficacia por aquellos a quienes son dispensados, para alcanzar los máximos beneficios terapéuticos derivados del tratamiento. Esta actividad contribuye tanto al bienestar del individuo como a la mejora general de la salud pública.Estos desarrollos establecieron las actividades para la práctica de la farmacia, cuyos orígenes fueron plasmados en diferentes reuniones para definir el papel del farmacéutico en el equipo de salud, el cual ha sido analizado en diversas actividades de carácter global de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, destacándose entre ellas la reunión efectuada en Nueva Deli en diciembre de 1988, en seguimiento a ésta, la efectuada en Tokio, Japón, en setiembre de 1993 y posteriormente en Vancouver en 1997, cuyas conclusiones permitieron establecer los conocimientos, habilidades así como las responsabilidades del farmacéutico en relación con las necesidades asistenciales del paciente y de la comunidad.
