A 3-electrode electrochemical method has been used to quantitatively assess the influence of ppm levels of H2S on the hydrogen oxidation performance of Ni-based solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) anodes as a function of applied current over a reasonable time frame. When performed under near identical polarization history due to non-steady-state anode behavior, this work shows that low currents (moderate overpotentials) do not influence the magnitude of S poisoning of Ni-based anodes. Furthermore, activation by polarization or infiltration of the Ni-YSZ anode with ceria does not seem offer any dramatic improvement in sulfur poisoning resistance at 764 oC, and relative recovery after H2S exposure is found to be worse in the case of ceria.
