“If You Enjoyed This Book, Join the Crime Club”: Armchair Detection and Reader Participation in Agatha Christie’s The Thirteen Problems

Abstract
In this paper, I analyze the similarities between the experiences of reading Christie’s The Thirteen Problems as a member of the Collins Crime Club and of the detective clubs formed by the characters in Christie’s stories. I examine how early reviewers, recent critics, and Christie herself emphasize the puzzle-type format of her stories and downplay the violence, making murder into a light diversion. Equally, I discuss how Crime Club members possess an advantage akin to Miss Marple’s knowledge of human nature: their knowledge of detective fiction tropes.
