Abstract
Nombre de pratiques et de savoirs amérindiens de caractère « sportif » ont été transformés par l’arrivée des colonisateurs, qu’il s’agisse du canot, comme invention d’un véhicule de déplacement, mais aussi comme jeux compétitifs, ou du tir à l’arc, comme arme de chasse et de guerre, mais aussi comme instrument sportif. Cette communication vise à souligner comment l’une de ces pratiques, le jeu de la crosse, a un statut particulier en raison de son organisation collective répondant à la recherche de cérémonies fusionnelles en mêlant un monde idéel de représentations au monde réel des lieux et de l’organisation économique, politique et idéologique de ces sociétés amérindiennes. Le jeu de la crosse est exemplaire de ces rites et savoirs amérindiens qui sont observés, récupérés, réappropriés, codifiés en sport normalisés. Sa transformation peut être présentée comme un exemple de résistance au processus global d’acculturation qui impose une conception mono-culturelle du sport fondée sur la professionnalisation et la médiatisation des sports dominants, et pour le Canada, du hockey sur glace.
