Abstract

The qubit depolarizing channel with noise parameter <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mi>η</mml:mi></mml:math> transmits an input qubit perfectly with probability <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mn>1</mml:mn><mml:mo>−</mml:mo><mml:mi>η</mml:mi></mml:math>, and outputs the completely mixed state with probability <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mi>η</mml:mi></mml:math>. We show that its complementary channel has positive quantum capacity for all <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mml:mi>η</mml:mi><mml:mo>&gt;</mml:mo><mml:mn>0</mml:mn></mml:math>. Thus, we find that there exists a single parameter family of channels having the peculiar property of having positive quantum capacity even when the outputs of these channels approach a fixed state independent of the input. Comparisons with other related channels, and implications on the difficulty of studying the quantum capacity of the depolarizing channel are discussed.
