Abstract
Romancier, essayiste et professeur de lettres classiques, Hugh MacLennan portait un regard emprunt de respect et d’admiration sur l’Europe et sa littérature. Cet article étudie la manière dont sa fiction cherche à construire et à entretenir cette relation de continuité avec le vieux continent et les raisons pour lesquelles le ton optimiste de ses premiers romans semble se dégrader en un pessimisme qui ne fait que traduire sa crainte que le Canada, alors pris dans les tourmentes des années 1960, puisse un jour oublier sa propre histoire.
