Le propos est ambitieux : P.B. cherche à établir, par une approche anthropologique de la représentation du martyre à l’époque moderne, selon quels schémas et par quels moyens « les modèles de la perfection confessionnelle » (p. 6) ont été élaborés, mis en scène et remémorés (on aimerait pouvoir ajouter « diffusés », mais cet aspect n’est pas vraiment traité).
