Abstract
La signification de la fin de l’esclavage pour les maîtres et les esclaves a été le sujet d’importants débats historiographiques. Cet article s’appuie sur les documents judiciaires des conflits civils pour examiner la nature du conflit social à Gumbu sur une période de quatre ans coïncidant avec une période de départs importants parmi les esclaves. Les documents judiciaires utilisés dans cet article sont empruntés aux tribunaux indigènes de premier niveau introduits par les Français en 1905, les premiers à conserver des documents écrits. Se reposant sur l’analyse de plus d’une centaine de cas, l’article examine les conflits résultant de questions de dettes, de contrats de propriété et de mariage. Les preuves retirées de ces dossiers mettent en évidence le désordre des adaptations qui avaient succédé à la postémancipation; en effet, les maîtres cherchaient à entraîner leurs anciens esclaves dans des situations litigieuses pour les empêcher de partir.
