Abstract
After more than two decades of neo-liberal economic policies, Australian society finds itself deeply divided. More than a quarter of the workforce have been condemned to the precariousness and insecurities of casualised, low-paid work and haunted by the incessant spectre of poverty. At the opposite extreme is the spectacle of Veblen's conspicuous and emulative rituals of consumption by the very wealthy. In between these two extremes, there has been the growing trend of a 'disappearing' middle class. All of these social trends are quite portentous and carry with them the seeds of potential social discord and class conflict.
