Le 6 août 1806, l’empereur François II se résignait à abdiquer, mettant ainsi un terme à une construction politique un peu plus que millénaire si l’on considère qu’Otton Ier, en 962, n’avait fait que poursuivre l’œuvre inaugurée par Charlemagne à Rome le 25 décembre 800.
