Abstract
Parler de l' Amérique, des Américains, de l 'américanité, dans l 'intention de nommer \nun continent, ceux qui I'habitent ainsi que leur sentiment d'appartenance \na ce territoire comporte, pour commencer, une série d'ambiguités que nous ne \npourrons que signaler dans ce travail. A cet effet, nous ferons un rapide survol \nsur le rapport entre l' idée de l' Amérique telle qu' elle fut conçue al' origine par \nles Européens et la réalité qu'ils ont tenté de faire correspondre a leur reve. Nous \nverrons ensuite, comment, surtout a partir du XVII eme siecle, se sont formés \ndeux grands blocs marqués par le sceau culturellié a l 'identité du colonisateur, \nce qui sera décisif pour leur développement respectif. Entre l 'univers anglosaxon \net la latinité brandie par Napoléon I1I, I'américanité empruntera deux \nvoies différentes qui passent par la doctrine Monroe. Sur cette toile de fond, Ol! \nse situe I'américanité des anglophones des E. U. et du Canada, celle des hispanophones \net des lusophones et celle des Québécois, Français d 'Amérique, done \naussi latins que ces latinoaméricains définis essentiellement par le métissage et \nle sous-développement? Il s'agit la de tout un programme qui demanderait un \nespace bien plus vaste que celui dans lequelj'aurai l'audace de I'approcher.
