This paper introduces a methodology for the model-based development of mechanical systems at the aircraft manufacturer level. The presented methodology is applied to the CSeries side stick controller, which is based on a “passive” technology. The first part of the presented methodology applies to the beginning of the conceptual design phase. It supports the risk mitigation and specification activities by assessing quantitatively the feasibility of complying with the feel dynamics requirements (e.g., natural frequency). The second part of the presented methodology deals with the validation and verification activities for the first hardware prototypes. A new requirement verification method is presented that is based on fitting a nonlinear physics model to test rig data. The results obtained by applying this methodology to the side stick of the CSeries are presented and discussed.
