This article discusses several surveys of both U.S. and Canadian citizens' attitudes about the safety of current and future tap water supplies. An American survey done in November 2005 titled, “A Clear Perspective of Americans and Their Drinking Water,” explored Americans' attitudes and behaviors on water conservation, home water treatment and security, water consumption, water quality, and attitudes about bottled water. The article discusses another survey done in 2004 on an equal number of households in both the U.S. and Canada, which asked the respondents about the likelihood of future drinking water‐related catastrophes resulting from neglect of drinking water supplies. Also discussed are results from surveys of different subpopulations and consumer types. Results of the surveys indicate that both Americans and Canadians feel strongly about the need to protect drinking water supplies.
