Abstract
La contribución de este trabajo es ilustrar la crítica social que tanto La Celestina como algunos continuadores del género celestinesco realizan del concepto del matrimonio que la Iglesia, el Estado y las familias influyentes querían imponer. El análisis tomará como punto de partida las circunstancias y evolución histórica del matrimonio durante la Edad Media y principios del Renacimiento. A partir de dicho referente histórico veremos cómo por medio de la literatura se pone de manifiesto que los intereses matrimoniales no eran los mismos entre quienes estaban en edad de casarse y las instituciones sociales del momento. Por un lado, veremos cómo los personajes toman como punto de partida en la relación de pareja, el amor, el afecto y el deseo sexual. Por otro, observaremos cómo las instituciones se empeñan en continuar con el control del matrimonio cohibiendo el deseo sexual, anulando el derecho a opinar de los jóvenes y haciendo de las alianzas una forma de beneficio económico. Igualmente se mostrará cómo las obras tratan el descontento de algunos eclesiásticos con el celibato y la prohibición del matrimonio, que en el pasado se había consentido, poniéndose de relieve que dichas prohibiciones no eran cumplidas.
