Destiné au grand public comme aux étudiants, ce livre retrace l’histoire du Québec depuis l’occupation du territoire par les Amérindiens jusqu’à l’élection du Parti libéral du Québec de Jean Charest en 2003. Grâce à une solide documentation, à la fine pointe des travaux les plus récents, cette synthèse ouvre des perspectives nouvelles et stimulantes ! Québécois d’origine anglophone, les auteurs profitent d’une distance de bon aloi pour analyser l’évolution de la société québécoise, en privilégiant une perspective socio-économique. Ils n’hésitent pas à examiner le passé à partir des questions actuelles : le rôle des femmes, la culture, les problèmes démographiques, le monde du travail et celui des affaires et la place réservée aux autochtones. Cette nouvelle mise à jour offre un très large développement sur l’histoire contemporaine du Québec et sa place à l’intérieur du Canada et de l’Amérique du Nord. Les deux auteurs étudient les idéologies associées aux référendums de 1980 et 1995 et les changements sociaux qui en ont découlé, jusqu’à la chute du gouvernement Landry. Grâce à un riche index, une bibliographie commentée à chaque chapitre, des nouveaux tableaux et des illustrations actualisées, cet ouvrage demeure une synthèse incontournable de l’histoire du Québec.
