Abstract
Miss Isabel TayIor (德明利姑娘), was born in a Scotland Christian family in 1909, and emigrated to Canada with his parents emigrated to Canada at 18 month old. After graduating from high school, she entered the Toronto Conservatory of Music (the former of The Royal Conservatory of Music), majoring in piano and vocal music. Besides, she also studies theology in Toronto Knox College. In June 1931, after graduating from Knox College, Isabel was sent to Taiwan by the Canadian Presbyterian Church. During her stay in Taiwan. Isabel went through the dominion of both Japanese and Chinese KMT government so she had to study 3 languages, including Taiwanese, Japanese, and Chinese. She had been forced to return to Canada due to the World War II. Right after the war, she came back to Taiwan again immediately, showing the great enthusiasm of a missionary. In music education, Isabel bred many outstanding musicians who became the main stream Taiwan's social forces. Besides serving the church, the students have also contributed a lot for the community with what they have learned. More and more successive followers bring even huger influences on the church music directly or indirectly. In church music, she was busy running among the churches, playing piano, conducting, and leading the choir. She has also hosted and edited 523 hymns for Taiwan Presbyterian Church. It took her tremendous efforts and uninterrupted seven years. Her efforts have laid a profound foundation for Taiwan church music. This edition hymn finished in 1964 has been used for 45 years, while it’s still sung now. Isabel arrived in Taiwan when it was barren of music. She had managed to find resources, and all the way to exert influence on Taiwan's music. Gradually, her achievements have gone beyond religion, and the churches. Besides hymns, the vigorous development of Taiwan's Western music today results from her hard work and contributions.
