Abstract
Thc linear sLability of Poiscuille fiow in a pipe is cxamincd for the infinitesimal disturbances propagating in bOlh, time .:md space. The numerical procedure for obtaining the eigenvalues of the linear problem and ilS adjoint is based on the spcctral coHocation method with shifted Chebyshev polynomials. The Fredholm alternntive is then applied lO determine the group velocity. \Ve show that [he temporal damping rates ofaxisymme(ric infinilesimal pcrturbntions are rclatcd lO (hose in space by [he group velocity in aeeord with (he theory first developcd by Gaster (1962).
