Durante las ultimas dos decadas la comunidad cientifica ha mostrado interes creciente por entender como la enfermedad periodontal podria estar relacionada con complicaciones del embarazo. Este interes surge, al menos en parte, porque a pesar de los avances en atencion prenatal todavia el desenlace adverso del embarazo continua siendo un grave problema de salud publica a nivel mundial. La periodontitis cronica representa un proceso infeccioso que afecta a mas del 23% de mujeres entre 30 y 54 anos de edad. La capacidad de diseminacion e induccion de inflamacion local y sistemica en el huesped por parte de los patogenos periodontales y sus factores de virulencia ha originado la hipotesis acerca de que la infeccion periodontal cronica puede tener consecuencias que rebasan las fronteras de los tejidos periodontales. Este articulo presenta evidencia que sugiere que la infeccion periodontal cronica constituye un riesgo importante para la aparicion de resultados adversos del embarazo; de igual forma, ofrece informacion donde se demuestra que el tratamiento periodontal oportuno logra reducir tales complicaciones
